Bath Tubs and Special Needs

Bathtubs

When it comes to bath tubs, some people simply need a little assistance to enjoy the same pleasures in life as everyone else. Because of this, bath tubs are now designed with a number of features for accessibility to include things such as a transfer bench seat and bath lift options. In addition to helping people with special needs get in and out of the tub, these bath tubs and features help a person retain his/her dignity.

Maybe the first item to consider for bath tubs for those with special needs is the transfer bench seat. This special chair is made to span from the inside the tub, over the rim of the tub, and then to the outside. To use the transfer bench seat, you would simply lift your legs over the tub’s edge, one leg at a time until securely seated. Once seated, your body would still be above water. By using a transfer bench in different styles of bath tubs, you can take a wonderful bath without the worry of getting up and down.

Transfer benches work with most styles of bath tubs, but when you’re ready to shop, you want to consider all your options since there are different styles. For instance, you could choose a contoured plastic surface, or if you prefer, one with a vinyl covered surface. Regardless, we strongly recommend you go with a transfer bench that has a back. With this, you would enjoy having back support while being in a more comfortable position. Be sure to talk to the salesperson to ensure the seat will work with all bath tubs, as terms of distance, space, and size, as well as left-handed or right-handed entry and exit.

Bath tubs can also be enhanced for certain people with a bath lift. The nice thing about using a bath lift is that if you love or need to take warm baths but have trouble getting in and out due to a disability or mobility challenge, this would lower your body into the tub and then help you out. Bath tubs of all types generally work well with a lift. You simply sit on the edge of the seat and with the push of a button, your body is slowly, and carefully lowered into the soothing water.

Bath tubs can use one of two types of lifts such as the hydraulic design or the battery-powered type. With the hydraulic bath lift, this is operated by water pressure from the bath tub tap. In the case of the battery-powdered lift, a rechargeable battery operates the unit. For this, you need to make sure the inner dimensions of the bath tubs are correct and preferably, that to get in and out, you would not have to remove the seat as a part of the bathing process.
