Making Your Own Shower Curtain

Have you been looking for the perfect shower curtain but without any luck? If you cannot find the color, pattern, or style or shower curtain you need or want, you might consider making our own. Interestingly, while some people think this type of project is hard, the truth is making a curtain such as this is easy and fun with outstanding results. The easiest option is to purchase enough flat material in the color or pattern you like, allowing a two-inch hem on all sides. However, you can do much more if you like.

If you cannot find the right material for your new shower curtain, then look at flat sheets. These come in designer styles that make a wonderful choice for a curtain. Then, whether using flat material or a sheet, you can come up with some interesting toppers, completely changing the appearance. The key is to keep the main design simple. For this, your shower curtain could have buttonholes for the rings, grommets, or you could even sew decorative on.

Let us say you wanted a beautiful garden style, shower curtain. For this, you would still choose the flat material needed but cut it about 10 inches shorter. Then on the top of the shower curtain, add another piece of fabric in a coordinating color or pattern. To enhance the curtain even more, you could add iron-on flower appliqués, attach pastel colored ribbon or lace where the two fabrics meet, or simply choose different colored rings, again in pastel colors for a unique look and interest.

If you do not have a sewing machine that can make buttonholes or you want something different for your shower curtain, something easier, you can always make a tie tab header. For this, you would sew short strips of matching or coordinating fabric, one on each side at the top of the panel. Then instead of buttoning or putting rings through grommets, you would simply tie the two pieces of fabric over the shower curtain rod, giving this a nice country look.

Another way to enhance the look of your shower curtain is to create a triple pleated header. If you were handy with a sewing machine, this makes a gorgeous shower curtain with an elegant style. For this, a panel of fabric twice as wide as the regular curtain is needed. Piece three whole panels together, cutting the assembled curtain less than 148 inches wide, hemming all of the edges. Next, measure and make your own triple pleating or you could use pleater tape purchased from a notions store, which is designed with the markings and folds already built in.

For this style of shower curtain, you want the spacing to stay the same as what you would have with a standard curtain. The only exception is that you want to have an additional six inches, which will be used to make each of the pleats. Then, the first and last mark should measure three inches from the finished edge of the curtain, keeping the remaining 11 spaces and 12 pleats with six inches of fabric each. While there are many different options for creating a topper on your new shower curtain, this one is always popular.
